In the Preface to the second edition of Religion within the Bounds of Bare Reason, referring to the judgements on his work, Kant expresses his deepest gratitude to the «celebrated Dr Storr of Tübingen» for the insight shown in his Annotationes quaedam theologicae ad philosophicam Kantii de religione doctrinam. However, while the question of whether Storr was an attentive reader of Kant has always been recognised as legitimate, it is equally legitimate to question ‘whether’ and ‘to what extent’ Kant was an attentive reader of Storr. In fact, a careful analysis of the Annotationes reveals not only a misunderstanding of certain Kantian theses, but also the marginal importance of references to Religion in Storr’s arguments. In this essay, I will formulate the hypothesis that Storr had already conceived a text on Kantian philosophy before the publication of Religion, which he then integrated with various references to Kant’s latest published work. To this end, I will demonstrate that Storr develops the two main themes of his Annotationes, i.e. the relation between morality and religion and the question of revelation, based mainly on works prior to Religion. In this way, I will show that quotations from Religion play only a marginal role in Storr’s arguments.
